Rule breaker

I’m back home after a marathon 4 month tour of Mrs Krishnan’s Party.

It’s weird not having to leave the house at a certain time and actually having my evenings back.

My usual rule for life is to be working on the next thing right as the last thing is finishing up.

This time, though, I’m just taking the rest- it’s nice not having to be at the top of my game each night at 7.30pm (and twice on Saturdays.)

The usual rules are usually good.

And sometimes you can just take a break from the rules.

Is there a rule you’re following that you could simply break for a change?

As Tim Ferriss would ask- what if you just did the opposite?

Prompts

People prompt Ai… why not prompt yourself?

We do it every day with the questions we ask: “Why is this so hard” tends to be a common one for people who have a difficult time with things.

“I wonder what will happen next” is a common prompt for the adventurous humans.

And the most creative? Well, It’s pretty straight forward; “What can I create out of this?”

Don’t leave the prompts for the robots- we are capable of far more than we think.

Memories

Isn’t it amazing that we can revisit, reanimate and re-experience memories whenever we choose?

When was the last time your stomach and face hurt from laughing?

Do you remember feeling so nervous you could hardly move?

When did you feel complete bliss?

All of these memories are there for us. It’s like a dormant library in our brain, waiting for us to stroll in and choose a book.

Its easy to never access these. Or to access just the same handful over and over.

And it’s also easy to simply ask the question:

“Remember when…”

3 Steps to making

Making something? Here’e a quick set of questions I run it through to increase my clarity and likelihood of following through.

1. What is the output?

This helps me understand what the end product actually looks like. Helps me to know when I’m done and what specifically to shoot for.

2. Why do I love this?

Helps me plug into passion. When in the weeds of creation it’s easy to forget why you love something.

3. Who is it for?

I borrowed this from the great Seth Godin. This helps me get clear on the purpose of the thing, what value it brings to the world and how I can provide that value in an even sharper way in the creation process.

There you have it. Try those out:

What’s the output

Why do I love this

Who is it for?

Quality Time

Quality time is time spent on good things.

Quality time could be 5 minutes.

Quality time is also turning ordinary time into durations that feel more productive. I find that an hour of uninterrupted work can feel hellishly unproductive. But if, in the middle of the hour, I go for a 5 minute walk or have a stretch break, the time (which is now shorter) feels much better,

We can transform the feeling of time with what we surround it with.

How do you turn ordinary time into extraordinary time?

Question guard

Questions frame and guide our focus. And our focus changes how we feel.

I could ask you to picture the front door of your childhood home.

Or I could ask you to think about your first break up.

In some ways, neither of those ‘existed’ for you before the question took you there.

Careful the questions you ask.

What’s good?

I love when people greet others with ‘what’s good?’

It’s kind of cool and I don’t really know what it means in that context.

But I like what it makes me think of. What’s good? A cup of tea on a rainy day.

What’s good? A grilled cheese sandwich.

What’s good? So many things!

We get what we ask for. I’d like to ask myself what’s good more often.

The lucky ones

We all have rules whether we know them or not.

We have rules for what has to happen for us to feel successful, to have fun or to feel appreciated.

A good way of finding your rules is to ask yourself: “What has to happen in order for me to feel ____”

And put any desired state in there…

To feel appreciated, for instance you might have to be told you’re awesome, or you might need people to see the work you’ve done and know how long it took you. Or you might be one of the lucky ones who just need to look at themselves in the mirror and smile to feel appreciated.

I say ‘lucky ones’… but the truth is, we’re in charge of our rules.

There’s nothing that says you can’t feel successful every time you take 5 minutes to be grateful.

There’s no rule that says you can’t feel deeply valued every time you show someone else they are deeply valued.

We’re the bosses, y’all. We get to choose the rules.

And while we’re at it, we might as well set ourselves and others up to win.

Course correcting pilots

Goals are great… when you remember them. Something I’ve noticed is I’m great at setting goals and feeling that initial enthusiasm. As I’m sure we all are. But it can be tricky to find effective mechanisms of follow through on the day to day. An inefficient way to get to any destination is to only check in a few times across the journey.

I like the image of a pilot needing to constantly course correct across the span of a flight. Did you know they are off course between 90% and 99% of the time? Pilots have to constantly course correct to get to their destination.

The same goes for our goals and I’m using a super simple daily question to help me do that. In my journal every morning I ask myself:

How can I course correct today?

It allows me to look at yesterday, what I did, didn’t do and how I spent my time. If I lived a day like that again would I get to where I want to go? If not, what could I do slightly differently today?

It’s nice to know we can be off 99% of the time and still get there.

It just requires a little course correction ✈️

Meaning makers

We are the ones who get to decide what things mean to us.

Is this the beginning or the end?

Is life a war or a test?

Yes, yes this is all great in theory… but this morning I spilt a third of my pristine smoothie and had an unsatisfying amount left.

The knee jerk meaning was that “this sucks, life sucks and I’m sad now.”

But then I realised that your highest behavioral aspirations only have real meaning when the going gets tough.

Sad smoothie? Yup that’s tough going.

So I decided to change the meaning. I looked down at the spilt smoothie and smiled…

“Yay, I get to have more breakfast!” I made a bowl of weetbix- something I don’t normally do- and enjoyed a Petit Déjeuner instead of being mad at my one third empty smoothie.

Oh wait, no- it was a two thirds full smoothie 😉
