The magic moments

It’s important to catch them…

The magic moments.

We spend so much time working, aspiring and perspiring toward outcomes. When the awesome moments happen it’s so easy to move on quickly.

I have a dated database in Notion called “Magic Moments”.

When a cool little thing happens, I put it in there- the date is already added.

It’s the best thing in the world to read back over these and be flooded by all the good:

-The stranger who smiled at me on the bus

-The unexpected sunset view from the hotel window

-That apple that was so great and crunchy.

They come and go so quickly you might miss them. Get in the habit of recording them, you won’t regret it.

Catch them

So many things happen to you and around you on a daily basis.

If you wanted to you could find tiny moments that you love.

Little instances of joy.

Micro snaps of magic.

They are there but only if you look. And it’s easy not to look. I’m enjoying journaling as a way of catching them before they’re forgotten forever.

You don’t have to journal- but I’m inviting you to create some way of catching these as well.

Course correcting pilots

Goals are great… when you remember them. Something I’ve noticed is I’m great at setting goals and feeling that initial enthusiasm. As I’m sure we all are. But it can be tricky to find effective mechanisms of follow through on the day to day. An inefficient way to get to any destination is to only check in a few times across the journey.

I like the image of a pilot needing to constantly course correct across the span of a flight. Did you know they are off course between 90% and 99% of the time? Pilots have to constantly course correct to get to their destination.

The same goes for our goals and I’m using a super simple daily question to help me do that. In my journal every morning I ask myself:

How can I course correct today?

It allows me to look at yesterday, what I did, didn’t do and how I spent my time. If I lived a day like that again would I get to where I want to go? If not, what could I do slightly differently today?

It’s nice to know we can be off 99% of the time and still get there.

It just requires a little course correction ✈️

Happy new year :)

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when it comes to reflecting on the year that’s past.

You want to do justice to what’s been, gather the lessons and plan ahead to the new year.

It’s a big task- so sometimes simple is best. Here are two simple questions that have helped me when doing a massive review is a bit much.

1)What were my favourite times of this past year?

List all the times you were having fun, or felt at your best. Write lots down, both broad snapshots in life and specific moments, get it all down.

      2)What are the commonalities?

What are the few things that these experiences had in common?

I.e Being in a new location, working fast and hard on a project, being around people you love and trust… etc

You’ve simultaneously looked at what you loved from the past year and are building an awesome year ahead.

        Happy new year 🙂

        When the going gets good

I noticed recently I only wrote in my journal when things were difficult or not going the way I wanted. I supposed it’s why we have the phrase ‘nothing to write home about’.

The problem with this is it’s training my brain to not notice when things are going good. The journal becomes the ambulance at the bottom of the hill, something we reach for as a tool for fixing things.

That’s okay- that’s part of why we journal.

But here’s a note to myself to remember to journal when things are good. Often when things are running smoothly we simply don’t notice. Then when we look back we don’t perceive those long stretches of smooth sailing.

If your perception of your life is just what you remember at the end of it all and you only stop to take note of the hard times, what do you think your perception of your life will be?

We must notice when it’s hard and we must MUST notice when it’s good. Our poor little brains put so much effort into creating an ideal environment for us, we have to do them a favour and spend time focusing on that stuff!

What is really working for you right now that you are not paying attention to?
