London calling

I’m in London and the atmosphere is incredible; vibrating with life. I’d never recognised it on previous trips. Today I get it.

A bike ride in the perfect spring sun.

Monster Jet lag.

What a day

The reality of the play

I made note while back stage during the show tonight. It was suddenly so clear to me how, as actors, we have to associate with the reality of the play.

It seems so obvious now writing it down, but it was searingly clear to me.

The pain these character’s feel is real pain being felt by humans on this planet right now.

Real hearts have fought these battles before.

Real tears have shed in the turmoil of these situations.

Real people have felt unseen, helpless and alone.

It’s the actors responsibility to connect to the reality. Honour those souls and bring yours to the table every night.

Logging failures

They say the person who has the most success has also clocked up the most failures.

All the creations Disney put out into the world before the one that put them on the map.

When I think about this I have the strong temptation to phone in all the ‘practice’ reps.

The belief that ‘this one won’t hit the big time, so I can just do a mock rep’.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. You have to try your best each and every time. Only then will the culmination effect take place.

Try your best each time and keep doing that over and over.

My favourite day

I went to the movies in the afternoon today AND went out to dinner.

two ingredients to make this a great day.

what are your ingredients?

Prep and forget

I had a client meeting today and I spent quite a lot of time preparing to know as much as I could about their situation an needs. I also spent time figuring out what I wanted to discuss.

In the past I have structured conversations like this, noting what I’ll start with and where we’ll go.

Today I bullet pointed ideas about what we should cover, but on a mentors recommendation I tried a different approach.

In the minutes leading up to the meeting I didn’t try and remember the sequence I wanted to follow, or even all the points I wanted to cover.

I let it all go.

As the call began, I focussed instead on being completely present.

Some things I had prepped never came up in conversation and other things I hadn’t anticipated were discused.

The prep was there to inform a live interaction.

Referring to notes would have killed the reality and flow of our conversation.

Instead- the conversation happened live and off the cuff but within the territory I had primed myself for.

All of my prep informed the conversation but did not dictate it.

What are you waiting for?

I went to Disney’s Epcot in Orlando today and waited in a lot of lines.

One was 75 minutes long- it was hot. There were no chairs. I had run out of water.

I know, poor me, I get to be at this world famous theme park.

The ride was around 6 minutes long and wasn’t anything special.

How could the 75 minute wait have been better?

Well, it’s not the external factors: the quality of the ride, the temperature, a supply of chairs or the state of my personal water bottle.

None of these are the true cause of either my misery or elation. That is up to me.

I was using those external factors as convenient evidence procedures for having a bad time.

Sure these are persistent illusions (the heat is a KILLER) but even that can’t defeat the strongest thermostat on the planet:

Your mind.

What’s wrong is always available to focus on. So is what’s right.

Esteem for your self

Where does self esteem come from?

How do you get esteem for yourself?

It comes from doing what you say you’re going to do. This sense of certainty that you’re a person of your word.

Better still, to do what you’re say you’re going to do when no one else is watching.

And better than that, to never tell a soul you did the thing.

When only you know. That’s how you build self esteem.

Celebrate the wins

There are certain monumental wins that deserve to be remembered forever.

How do you celebrate those key moments in order to allow them to be felt in your whole being?

This will hep you remember forever.

Remember the day that everything changed.
