Think Big

The missing piece of cake

They say that one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.

I think the same is true for things we know.

Something that is a piece of cake for you might be the missing piece for someone else.

One person’s breakfast is another person’s breakthrough (Trying to coin a phrase, is it any good?)

We’re often too close to our own abilities, skills, stories, distinctions and remarkable results to see the potential value they can provide to someone.

So don’t be stingy with the magic you make, it’s your responsibility to share it.

Trust that you’ll look up soon and see it.

This week has felt unproductive. I’ve felt scattered across 4 different areas, task switching (I know) and seemingly making no progress on any.

The tasks were all meaty enough to require multiple sittings so I didn’t have the satisfaction on any to get a clean completion.

Yet…

I look up from my whirlwind week and I see a little garden of jobs that are nearly done I’m not condoning task switching or multitasking… BUT I think we’d do well to remember the long (ish) game when coming to these multi-sit tasks.

They won’t feel satisfying.

They won’t be done in one sitting.

You’ll get confused.

You’ll be tired.

And you’ll probably have to go on a few side quests within the tasks.

But keep plugging away, because soon enough you will look up and you’ll see…

“Okay, good. I did move the needle”

Becoming the phone

Opportunity is attracted to movement.

Ever notice how job offers, new clients and requests come flying in the moment you decide to focus on your own creation?

This seems to be true in the acting world. It’s like a Murphy’s law of sorts; you wait for the phone to ring and it never does. Then you decide to go build a sand castle and it’s ringing off the hook.

We have to be careful though…

We mustn’t make the sand castle to try and coax the opportunity; it doesn’t work that way.

We also mustn’t create movement for movement’s sake; creating more busy-ness doesn’t help.

The real secret is building a sand castle so grand and so exciting, that when the phone rings you genuinely consider not answering it.

That’s where the real juice is. When your sand castle is more compelling than someone else’s (and it will be, because you made it the way you like) you end up leaving them to do their thing and guess what?

You’ll be picking up the phone to call in some talented people looking to apply their skills.

Don’t wait for the phone.

Become the phone.

One shot vs Infinity

How likely are you to get a ball in a hoop if you had one shot?

How about if you had ten shots?

What about one hundred? It seems obvious, when you have more shots to take you have more chances to get the ball in.

Turns out this goes for more than just basketball.

We have to give ourselves as many chances as possible to strike gold on the thing that matters to us.

Writers have to write as many stories as possible,

Actors need to audition as much as possible

and potters need to make many pots.

And in case you’re wondering, the point isn’t for the hope that one will be a ‘big break’. Sure that might happen…

But what you’re really looking for wears many clothes. With hundreds of chances we can ask ourselves:

Is it alive?

Do I love this?

What does it remind me of?

Do other people enjoy this?

How about this one?

Or maybe this one?

Or this one?

What’s it like when I change this part?

Does it still work like this?

Or this?

The person who takes the most turns gets the most chances and gets to ask the most questions and so they also get the most answers.

Would you place your bet on the player who has one shot to get the ball in or the player who has infinite shots to try?

Its obvious. And with those numbers it’s no longer interesting whether or not she gets the shot in. The player with infinite shots will get it in the basket, but she might also reinvent basketball.

Don’t cheat yourself and just take the one shot.

You have infinity, my friend.

Indirect Paths

Some of the most sought after things have indirect paths. I’ve heard it described like a cat- the more you chase it, the further away it runs.

Its difficult to relax by pushing or forcing it- an action directed toward that outcome is counter to it’s realisation.

The same goes for money. If you chase money you will rarely find it.

If you want to be liked by others, you won’t get there by focussing on being liked by others.

If an actor wants a scene to land as sad, they don’t go for the emotion.

Great results come from indirect paths.

To relax we have to let go. To gain financial abundance we must create value. To be liked by others we must care for them in a way that speaks to them. To play the sad scene, the actor must fight tooth and nail to hold on.

What are you going for directly that actually requires an alternate route?

The boring bit and the best bit

When you’re making something, sometimes there’s an aspect or part that you find boring.

The chapter in the book you don’t like. The song in the album you always forget.

You’ve got it there because it makes sense, it follows the rules and it does the job…

But it doesn’t light you up like the other bits.

Here’s a challenge- how can you transform that bit into the thing that excites you the most?

What would you have to do in order to make the boring bit the best bit?

Don’t let your art bore you, dip in pink paint and swing it ‘round till it sprays the walls.

Get a thrill out of it!

Real life magic and self fulfilling prophecies

Have you ever noticed how you get precisely what you expect?

If you’re a gym goer, here’s an example you might relate to. You need to do 10 repetitions of an exercise. You pick the weight up; “Oof, that’s heavy”. You say to yourself “Hmm… well, if I get to 8 that’ll still be good”

What number do you get to and simply can’t push any more?

8.

I realised this internal mechanism one day when I mis-read my workout tracker and picked up a heavier weight than I was supposed to… but I still completed the number of repetitions for the exercise I was supposed to be doing.

I had accidentally increased the weight I was able to lift. I had thought it was my physical body preventing me from lifting more, but in that case it was psychological.

Just because I expected to be able to do it, I could.

It’s also said that you’ll use all the time you give yourself to complete a task. If you set a ten year goal, you’ll likely take the whole ten years to get there.

Set the same goal for one year and you move a little different.

It’s worth questioning and sometimes changing our expectations to match the results we want.

Pick good beliefs

The best thing about beliefs is you get to choose them

The second best thing is they don’t have to be true.

They just have to serve you.

The adage goes that whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.

I think most people believe they can’t change their beliefs- funny that.

If we can divorce ourselves from ‘reality’ and choose instead to believe only that which serves us and others, we can probably do anything.

After all, it was ‘impossible’ for humans to run the four minute mile until Roger Bannister did it.

Once we saw him do it suddenly everyone could do it.

Did the evolution of the human body speed up that year or did we all change our beliefs?

Your beliefs are up to you- pick some good ones, yeah?

Win win

The best things in life aren’t free- the best things are win- win.

And here’s the best part- you get to control that.

We have to seek them win wins though- we have to look for them. I found one today I can’t wait to share with you:

The apple CarPlay in my car drops out sometimes. I’m not sure why- but it’s SUPER annoying. The last few times it happened, my face almost melted off I was that annoyed.

So this morning I had a plan. I popped my AirPods within easy reach and set off in my car. My Lenny Kravitz song was only in the first verse when CUT! my CarPlay stopped working.

Without missing a beat I put my AirPod’s in and continued listening to the man, the myth, the Lenny.

Win. Win.

If my CarPlay works- GREAT! I get to groove and the whole world can hear. If it drops out GREAT! I get to have a private ear drum party with my favourite songs.

This is how we must approach life. Set yourself up to win no matter the outcome. We can do this by manipulating our physical world (like the CarPlay situation). Or we can do it by reframing the outcomes to mean more empowering things for ourselves; “if this happens it’s good because X, and if that happens it’s good because Y.”

The best things in life are win win.

Everything happens perfectly

Here’s a belief to try on for size:

Everything happens perfectly.

“Everything” because it encompasses all events of your life, whether ‘good’ or ‘bad’- it’s the whole enchilada!

“Happens” because it was in the past, it’s now and it will be in the future.

“Perfectly” because it’s like it’s by design. It was all needed to elicit growth in you and usher you directly to where you are now and where you are going. It couldn’t (and shouldn’t) have been any other way.

Everything happens perfectly.

Let it free you and let it empower you.
