Don’t forget the victories

What was once a dream that is now part of your every day life?

We’re really good at forgetting good stuff.

It might be because of the insatiable human appetite for progress. Forgetting milestones probably serves us well in our pursuit of more and better.

But that’s a bit of an empty existence- success without fulfillment.

It might seem like a silly example but when I first started acting I remember how an audition would rule my entire day.

Well, to be perfectly honest I’d get the audition through and I’d question whether I could get anything else done that week…

If I was auditioning at 2pm on a Tuesday, nothing else existed until after that audition. Even then I probably took the rest of the day to gather myself and recover.

These days I can pack a full day around an audition and still have a great time.

This is progress- I’ve grown a LOT since the old days. I found myself lamenting that I wasn’t getting enough done recently and I suddenly remembered where I came from.

That I once couldn’t have imagined having the types of days I’m having now.

But of course now it’s just an ordinary day.

I think we’d do well to remember it wasn’t always like this. To give ourselves some credit and celebrate the things we forget to celebrate.

What is in your life now that was once a dream?

What is the through line in your work?

There’s an adage that artists, filmmakers and story tellers really only tell one story over and over again.

Each story they tell is a version of the same thing told in a different way.

And they’re not repeating themselves, but peeling an onion. It’s an ongoing exploration of the same theme.

It’s an interesting thought and when I look to my favourite artists, writers, thought leaders and change makers it rings true.

There is a through line to their career, a central theme that ties it all together. And I don’t think this is something someone constructs, I think it comes out of you. It is you.

When I first heard the idea I didn’t like to think that people would be limited in this way.

But I think it’s only limiting in so much as we are limited by the skin that surrounds us.

It doesn’t limit us, it just is us.

Match the energy to the task

Recently I gave up coffee.

I know; sad face.

The reason isn’t about coffee so much as the chapter I’m in right now. I’m a naturally excitable person and when you add a strong americano to that at about 10am- well, you get a LOT of positive energy from me.

Being caffeinated creates a certain type of energy in me. It’s great for big ideas, getting the pen going and filling an empty white board. Caffeinated energy plugs me into the visionary mindset; anything is possible, everything it fun and we can do it all.

That’s a great space to be- sometimes.

What I noticed was the chapter I’m in now actually calls for something else.

At the moment my days are solitary. I don’t need to project energy to a room full of 400 kids, or even teach to camera. At the moment my tasks are a cycle of writing, editing, walking or building pages for the website.

These tasks require attention to detail- something that the soaring visionary energy struggles with.

On coffee, I found myself easily caught up with ideas or tasks as they came up while I was trying to get on my quiet calm work.

So I removed it, in favour of an energy source that is more fitted to my rhythm and outputs right now.

So I’m challenging my own belief that all energy is created equal. Just as tasks vary greatly, so too should the energy source we bring to them.

Teaching a thousand kids at a time

I remember seeing on The Simpsons years ago a futuristic scene where there was a teacher beamed into hundreds of classroom tvs and teaching digitally. Here is a picture of it!

It cracks me up that last week I was literally that guy. I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive about taking my teaching to a live zoom direct to kids. But I was blown away by how well it worked and how the lesson content translated.

Here’s what worked:

  1. Personalisation. Just like in person, kids love to be seen and acknowledged. One of the best parts of having a screen to interface with meant every classroom was clearly labeled. A simple ‘hello xyz primary school, room 12 look at you go!’ Seemed like a rock star shout out for the kids!
  2. Get moving! The session I led was all about getting moving and speaking in Te Reo. The virtual-ness of the session didn’t stop us there either! I could see hundreds of classes up, moving and having a great time.
  3. Focus setters. A unique aspect of teaching through video is we can cast focus literally by having specific things on the screen. Look at this, then look at this, then this, then this. This was the same for the zoom, I could direct focus by curating the content on the screen. I could even select certain super star schools to showcase to everyone else.

I never anticipated that zoom would be so additive to the particular type of lesson I wanted to deliver. Zooms don’t have to be boring and impersonal, the kids proved they can rock the classroom no mater where they are.

Urgency- now or later?

You know when you have a deadline coming up and things get more urgent the closer you get to it?

Yeah- well I think motivation is being able to bring that urgency forward to the present to let it act on you now.

The more we do that for things that are important to us, the more we’ll get done and quicker.

When you stop scheduling your daily habits

It’s actually a good thing.

It means you just do them and they’re part of your day to day.

You don’t schedule when you brush your teeth but you probably do it most days (I hope).

Don’t clog your calendar, just get on and do your habits because that’s what you do.

One or the other

People who are hyper conscious of their time often get a bad wrap for accounting for every minute.

I don’t think it’s bad to be active in your use of your time. It’s not that you need to be productive every hour of every day, but I do think we should all be purposeful.

I will spend the next hour cooking and hearing how my son’s day was.

I will spend the next three hours watching tv with my friend and getting swept up in the story.

Rest or work? Presence with a loved one or being on your phone? No option is bad or good, just choose one and do it.

Just don’t pretend you’re doing one, when you’re actually lazily slipping into something else.

Our demise should never be because of our lack of decision.

Standards

How you do anything is how you do everything.

Do the dishes and make your bed.

Then when it comes time to do your best at the thing that matters most to you, you’ll be ready.

Home is

Converting strangers into friends.

If home is a place where you feel comfortable; where you say howdy to the shop keeper.

Where people know your name and you care about how their day was.

Then you can create home anywhere by opening up to the people in the new place. Leading with curiosity and love. Create your community and make strangers your friends.

Home can be anywhere.
